Discover beautiful Amsterdam on our year-round flower excursion! Escape the hustle and bustle of downtown as you retreat into "Hortus Botanicus", Amsterdam's oldest and most historical indoor/outdoor botanic gardens.
We'll start off with a lovely guided tour of this true nature lover's haven, discovering its more than 6,000 plants and 4,000 different species, while identifying its important groups of abundant herbs, extremely rare trees and "victoria amazonica" or giant water lily! We'll also have a chance to explore the tropical butterfly greenhouse and snap many incredible photos…perfect to make into a calendar for an original gift idea! We'll also see a plethora of South African plants, cycads, palms, and both conservatory and carnivorous plants.
Founded in 1638 by the Amsterdam City Council, the garden was originally created as a medicinal herb garden. Hortus Botanicus was an especially essential place for Amsterdam back in the 1600's when the city experienced a major plague epidemic. Many of the local doctors and pharmacists were actually trained at the Hortus Botanicus on how to prepare prescriptions to treat the severely ill people. In fact, many of the herbs that you will see on your visit are still used today for nutrition, pharmaceutics, fibers and pigments. We will also enjoy lunch at the gardens or at a nice, nearby cafe.
Following the gardens, we'll go on a lovely canal cruise and depending on the season, identify the various types of vegetation that we see along our journey. Amsterdam has about 100 canals and 1,000 bridges! We'll also visit a flower park with a beautiful windmill, take photos, and drive into the countryside, passing by all of the breathtaking 17th and 18th century houses with their gorgeous, lush gardens.
