Jewish Copenhagen - Walking/Driving TourExplore > Denmark > Copenhagen > Jewish Copenhagen - Walking/Driving TourOverviewThis is the best overview of Copenhagen with a Jewish perspective. In September 1943, martial law was declared in Denmark and the representative of the German Reich in Denmark advocated deporting the Jews. Fortunately, the attache for shipping affairs maintained good relations with leading Danish Social Democrats and informed them of the impending danger for the Jews. A rescue organization was established overnight and 7,200 Jews and 700 non-Jewish relatives fled for Sweden. This spontaneous and successful effort eventually developed into the very successful Danish Resistance Movement. We'll begin this lovely day by exploring downtown Copenhagen and passing by Copenhagen's classic monuments, as well as various Jewish points of interest. Go by the University, Danish Parliament, Christiansborg Palace, Danish Jewish Museum (designed by Daniel Libeskind in 2004), the Round Tower, the Latin Quarter, the Cathedral of Copenhagen, the Old Jewish Quarter, and the Copenhagen Synagogue. We'll also see the Royal Palace, Amalienborg, Nyhavn Canal, Gefion Fountain, the Little Mermaid statue, the Pedestrian Street (main shopping area), and much more! After the walking portion of the tour, we'll head out to the little fishing village of Dragor, where the guide will share their personal story about their family and the incredible rescue of more than 7,000 Danish Jews during World War II. It was actually brave fishermen that helped more than 95% of the Jewish population in Denmark to safety in Sweden. Many Jews escaped from Dragor on small boats, including the fishing boat Elisabeth, that you can visit today. Today, Dragor is a charming village with old half-timbered houses, cozy cafes, and restaurants. Only 10 miles from downtown Copenhagen, your visit to Dragor will not only evoke the past, but also give you an interesting and unique look into contemporary life in small Danish villages. During our tour of Dragor, we'll take a coffee break in one of the little village’s many lovely cafes. - This is a walking and driving tour. - Please let us know if you want to incorporate a visit to the Danish Jewish Museum. Entrance fees will not be included (approx. 40 Danish Kroner per person). - Please note that you must be comfortable walking up to 1.5 miles, sometimes over cobblestone streets.
